The Best Of Both Worlds

I was in my sewing room working on a project for one of our patients who is getting ready for college. April came in and asked what I was doing. I told her I was making a laundry bag for a friend. April wanted to know her name of course. When I told April her name was Hannah she got all excited. April asked if I was going to her house. My grandaughter proceeded to tell me that she wanted to go meet Hannah Montana too. I still have not convinced her it is a different Hannah.

Nothing like a good lightening storm to make you appreciate the power of electricity. Watching the lightening outside the 3 big picture windows at work made me very aware of the force of nature. Mother Nature has some wicked toys. The big boom that knocked out our power was a perfect example of the power of an unseen force. It came and went before we even had a chance to react.
Chiropractic is an unseen force that naturally allows the body to work at its full potential. Chiropractic removes the unseen forces, called subluxations, that keep the nervous system from working properly.
The brain controls all the body's functions. It communicates with other parts of the body by nerve impulses. Most of these impulses are relayed to the other body parts via the spinal cord. The spinal cord is protected by the spinal column, which consists of individual vertebrae separated by cushioning discs.

From the spinal column, nerves network out between the vertebra to most of the organs and muscles in the body. Upon exceptional stress to your spinal column, such as an accident, years of poor posture, or long-term tension, the vertebrae can slip out of position and "pinch a nerve." The term for this condition is SUBLUXATION.

A vertebral subluxation is a misaligned vertebra causing interference with nerve messages between the brain and the body. This can cause symptoms of backache, tingling in the arms and legs, head-aches, fatigue, improper digestion and other system dysfunction.
Chiropractic locates subluxations and through gentle adjustments can restore the body's normal functions. With nerve passages open and regulatory impulses free to pass, the body's miraculous nervous system can heal itself. Chiropractic goes directly to the root of the problem. It does not mask symptoms as painkillers and frequently addictive prescription drugs often do.
God blessed chiropractors with the knowledge to help the body heal itself. It is a wonderful blessing and one I am thankful for. I have seen its power in my life and in the lives of family, friends and patients. If you or someone you know is suffering with backaches, head-aches, fatigue or other symptoms, give us a call. We will be glad to help you "Get Back Into Life!"

Pay It Forward

I was thinking back 20 or so years to how I came to know about chiropractic. It was then I remembered I hurt myself paying kick ball with the children in my daycare center. A friend told me about chiropractic and I went to see Dr. Knittle in Versailles. At the time I knew nothing about chiropractic or how it worked. All I knew for sure was I was in serious pain. Did it relieve the pain? YES! I was able to return to work as the Daycare Director and assume my position as kickball coach. Chiropractic changed my outlook on health care.

Someone took the time to Pay It Forward by introducing me to chiropractic. It not only allowed me to return to work.... it became my work. After retiring from childcare I answered an ad for an office position and now 13 years later I still work for Dr. Mike. The person who referred me gave me a new way of life, in more ways than one.

I woke up this morning thinking about how I could do the same for someone else. The person who referred me to a chiropractor had no idea how that simple gesture would change my life.
Many times it is the simple act of kindness that touches us the most.

Here are some ideas of ways to Pay It Forward:

1. Offer to take care of a neighbors yard while they are out of town
2. Pay for the persons meal behind you in the drive-thru
3. Hold the door open for someone
4. Make it a habit to bring in 3 carts from the parking lot of the store where you
shop ( It will bless the poor soul who usually has to do this job!)
5. Invite a friend or co-worker who doesn't have family locally to spend the holiday with you
6. Take home baked goodies to the local Police or Fire Stations
7. Adopt a patient at a nursing home who has no family to visit.
8. Send thank you cards to folks who made a difference in your life (pastors, teachers, family)
9. Clean someones home who is ill
10. Start a neighborhood gift basket. Fill it with goodies and leave it on a neighbors door with
instructions to fill it and give it to another neighbor.
11. Start a Secret Pal group at your church or workplace.
12. Sew for charities: cancer caps, wheelchair & walker bags, preemie gowns
13. The Toy Society is a group that makes and drops toys secretly around town.
14. Make it a habit to smile and greet as many folks during your day as possible!
15. Leave a treat on your co-workers desk

And of course, tell them about chiropractic!

Have a great week!

Birthdays Rock!

Birthdays are a big deal at our house. Of course there are presents and cake but also a big meal. April always has to taste test the icing off the cake and she loves the birthday cards. Especially the ones that play music. She keeps everyone's cards and opens them until they fall apart.

The younger family members love getting older. Another year means they are getting closer to their independence. For others getting older means we need help with our independence.

Chiropractic is an excellent step toward wellness. Wellness is a choice. A decision you make towards optimal health. Wellness is a way of life . Wellness is the interaction of the body, mind and spirit. The appreciation that everything we do, think, feel, and believe has an impact on our state of health.

Chiropractic is based on the philosophy that the body is a self-healing, self-regulating and self-developing organism and that your nervous system is the master system and controller of your body. If you cut your finger, it heals. You don’t have to take anything or do anything to make that happen. If you were to cut the finger of a dead person, healing would not occur. Life heals, it is as simple as that.

You live your life through your nervous system. It is the master system and controller of your body. Right now your heart is beating, kidneys are working, liver is functioning, brain chemicals are flowing all without you having to think about it. This is because your nervous system is coordinating it all and making it happen. What would happen if there was interference with the function of your nervous system? It would interfere with you body’s ability to heal and regulate.

An important term and concept that every person should know and understand is vertebral subluxation. Vertebral subluxation, or subluxation for short, refers to a mechanical problem in the spine that relates to nerve interference. When a person is subluxated, it reduces their ability to heal, regulate and express well-being. Like cavities in teeth, subluxations are very common in our culture. It is the primary goal of the chiropractor to detect and correct subluxations so that you can improve healing, regulation, and general well-being.

A limited nervous system means limited wellness. If we want to optimally create higher levels of wellness, we then need to remove nervous system interference as a part of the process. Dr. Mike is uniquely trained to do this. Millions of people, from infants to seniors over 100 years old, benefit from chiropractic adjustments every year.

The Chip Clip

Creativity makes the world go round. Without it we would never have experienced the Slinky, Sponge Bob Square Pants, Slip & Slide or my favorite Velcro!
April decided her "hot chips" needed to be close to the fridge by her milk so she used a magnet clip to stick them on the fridge. Think we could market the Snack Clip?
I love the story behind Velcro. It begins with a hike in the Swiss woods in 1948. Inventor George de Mestral noticed that he and his dog were coated with cockleburr seed casings. Under a microscope, de Mestral discovered that the seed casings contained numerous tips with hook-shaped ends. It was these natural hooks which clung so stubbornly to the loose weave of his pants and the dog's fur. George de Mestral believed that a fastening device made from a similar hook and loop design could rival the metal zipper in popularity and versatility.

After several attempts to create a suitable prototype, de Mestral and a French fabric designer finally discovered a way to use nylon fibers under an infrared lamp to create the necessary hooks. Matted nylon fibers would also form the field of loops needed to complete the adhesive process. The name VELCRO was formed from the French words Velour (velvet) and crochet (hook). De Mestral officially formed the Velcro™ company in Switzerland in the early 1950s and received patents from virtually every industrialized country in the world.
So begins the world of Velcro. I use it for everything.
Chiropractic has its beginnings in a similar way. On September 18, 1895, D.D. Palmer was working late in his office when a janitor, Harvey Lillard, began working nearby. A noisy fire engine passed by outside the window and Palmer was surprised to see that Lillard didn’t react at all. He approached the man and tried to strike up a conversation. He soon realized Lillard was deaf.

Patiently, Palmer managed to communicate with the man, and learned that he had normal hearing for most of his life. However, he had been over in a cramped, stooping position, and felt something "pop" in his back. When he stood up, he realized he couldn’t hear.
Palmer deduced that the two events -- the popping in his back and the deafness -- had to be connected.

He ran his hand carefully down Lillard’s spine and felt one of the vertebra was not in its normal position. "I reasoned that if that vertebra was replaced, the man's hearing should be restored," he wrote in his notes afterwards. "With this object in view, a half hour's talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever, and soon the man could hear as before."

Over the succeeding months, other patients came to Palmer with every conceivable problem, including flu, sciatica, migraine headaches, stomach complaints, epilepsy and heart trouble.
D.D. Palmer found each of these conditions responded well to the adjustments which he was calling "hand treatments." Later he coined the term chiropractic -- from the Greek words, Chiro, meaning (hand) and practic, meaning (practice or operation).
Although he never used drugs, under Palmer's care fevers broke, pain ended, infections healed, vision improved, stomach disorders disappeared, and of course, hearing returned.
Often surprised at the effectiveness of his adjustments, D.D. Palmer returned to his studies of anatomy and physiology to learn more about the vital connection between the spine and one's health.
We are only given one spine to last a lifetime. Chiropractic gives us the ability to protect our spine and keep our bodies healthy!
Have a great weekend!

Summer Fun

April went pretend camping yesterday with other kids from church. They had a wonderful campsite set up with tents, a pretend fire, fishing pond and of course their sleeping bags and flashlights. April had a great time catching the fish they made. After a bear hunt of over 150 stuffed bears hidden around the campsite, a bug hunt, making ice cream in a bag and crafts, this memaw was exhausted.

I couldn't wait to get to the office to receive my chiropractic adjustment this morning. If pretend camping has me this sore and stiff I cannot imagine what real camping would do to me! Setting up three tents used muscles I had forgotten about. Bending over making crafts with the children, hunting bears and insects, carrying coolers, hiking, playing in tents and cleaning up afterwards put my body through a workout.

Every season, our bodies take on new tasks. From the shovelling of snow in winter to the mowing of the lawn in summer. Seasonal activities can put a strain on our spines.

Most seasonal injuries are preventable. To prevent back pain and other injuries it is recommended that you warm-up your body by stretching the muscles and joints. Gardening and yard work are both great physical activities. At a rate of 300 calories per hour, making sure your yard is vibrant and pleasant can mean shedding extra pounds of unwanted weight.

Computer workers and physical labourers will tell you that it’s tough to do the same task over and over throughout the day. Break up repetitive tasks by switching arms or taking several rests during each hour of work. Gardening and yard working tools, as well as many sports activities, often require repetitive actions that can lead to joint dysfunction and irritated nerves that can not only hurt you physically, but also lower your level of overall health. Alternate the frequency and intensity of your activities to keep you out of pain.

Enjoy your summer and remember to keep those chiropractic maintenance appointments!

Living The Wild Life

Today April took me, along with her daycare class, to the Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort KY. It used to be known as simply the game farm. I had not been there in several years and was quite surprised by the new additions to the facility.

The indoor exhibits include:

Two beautiful lakes for fishing and feeding the local geese bread. There is no cost for fishing, just need your fishing license.

We had a great time and loved the experience. Everything is free to the public!
